I'm a studio guy too. I mean, I feel like I can put on a good visual show (I was fairly recognized at my high school for my music videos for the songs I did) HOWEVER, where I fail is in the singing.

To put it another way: In the studio, I can redo vocals where I went flat, wasn't loud enough, etc. Outside of the studio, not so much Sad.

Speaking of which, do you have any tips for staying in tune while singing? I wouldn't know if there would be any or not...?

Is it when you're moving around or when you're staying on the same note?

It it is when you are moving around, it helps to stop the song right at that point, figure out where you went wrong, and the practice the transition between those two or four notes, over and over again until you can do it without problem, then introduce the parts before and/or the parts after it to see if you can eventually get past that phrase without a problem.

If the problem is when you're on the same note, I honestly don't know what to tell you. I'm the person who took back several walkmans to the store to get a different one because it was a 1/8 of a step off. I eventually found out where the little adjuster was when I took it apart and just did it myself, making sure the pre-recorded store-bought tape was exactly the same speed as the the CD. I used to listen to a lot of music on the radio and cringe because I would hear that so many of the singers weren't really singing in tune--but there they are, on the radio for all to hear and enjoy. Now people notice that kind of thing more because they've gotten used to voice pitch correction that gets done so often now.

If it's an issue of remembering the exact pitch, you need to be able to build a point of reference in your head. You may have to get out a keyboard or something so you can hold a note that is playing that might be messing you up, a note that makes it hard to stay in pitch, and practice singing the difficult notes against that note on the keyboard so you can be sure that you will be able to sing it when it comes up for just a short moment--or long.

A lot of it is getting used to pitches in general. A lot of it is just practicing singing--but when you practice, you have to make sure that you practice against something so you know you can stay in pitch. Eventually you can start weaning yourself off that kind of thing and not worry about it, but if it's really something you struggle with, it could take years to get perfected. That is not to say you shouldn't sing otherwise--on the contrary--you should sing as much as you can--but when you PRACTICE, make sure that you're practicing things that will help you on your journey of pitch analysis.
