Personally, I am very annoyed with fedex. UPS has never done me wrong. I find them to have very good performance, okay prices, and a great bunch of policies.
here's why I am mad at fedex:
I won a new guitar through ebay. I have been so excited to receive it and use it, as it is a very badass guitar.
Fedex around here delivers at 1:00 pm. (Whereas UPS usually comes to me about 5:00 pm.) When on earth am I going to be around to receive this package? I almost ALWAYS am at work until later than that.
Second-- I missed them this friday and thought "damn, well it'll be here tomorrow." I look on the slip, "Next delivery time: Monday." That's right. The fedex around here anyway, DOES NOT DELIVER ON SATURDAYS. Strike two against fedex vs ups, as UPS DOES deliver on saturdays.
Third-- unbelievable. This is truly pathetic. So I call and say "where can I drive to pick up my package. I'm excited about my package and would like to come pick it up." This is, honestly, something that happens about half of the time with UPS as I am not always home even at 5. "That's impossible sir, we do not have a customer service center for ground deliveries."
So, they deliver at 1:00 during the work week, (by the way, I almost missed my new computer this way, too,) they don't deliver on saturdays, and you CANNOT go pick up your package if they missed you.
From this point forward I am going to always at least try and specify when I win stuff on ebay, "Can you please go through UPS instead of Fedex? I'll give you more money if necessary."
For the record though, I think UPS is actually cheaper then fedex or at least the same. When I have used them for mail service I found their prices to be unbelievable.

Neither. I prefer the post office. It sends a letter faster and cheaper and more reliably to the same location (at least here). For some bizarre reason, UPS and FedEx charge me more for shittier service. Why the hell does a letter cost me MORE to go to the same location...in MORE time? WTF?
I'll stick with Priority Mail =D
I love the gub'ment.

Man, a lot of people have been saying that wherever I ask. Makes me wonder-- WHY is it that amazon.com is almost EXCLUSIVELY UPS, and most people on Ebay either do Fedex or UPS?
I mean, maybe Amazon.com has a deal worked out with UPS?
But what about Ebay? Why are people going through more expensive private shippers if USPS is better?
I wouldn' tknow much about US postal service because the only packaging I do is when I am receiving one through a web site, and I have basically maybe once or twice received it through the US postal service, whereas like 70% of the time it is UPS and 30% fedex.

When I'm sending things off, I go USPS. As far as personal experience with FedEx or UPS, I actually have very little. I tend to go with UPS just because I assumed that FedEx would be more expensive (like when I'm ordering something online).

Who doesn't love a statutory monopoly? It's great for smaller stuff. UPS is the only choice for me though when it comes to larger items. $600.00 worth of insurance for free. Have you ever tried to collect insurance from the Post Office? I'll give you a hint. They're like other government agencies.

Yea, they are like many other government agencies; more reliable than their private counterparts.

That as well, but that certainly has nothing to do with the joy of trying to collect insurance from an *cough* efficient government system.
One of the things I DO like about the Post Office is the fact that it's relatively cheap to send larger Priority Mail. They have a couple of boxes that are a flat fee as long as you can fit your item in the box.
*EDIT: (Commentary here is pointing out what I mentioned in the Stein thread) Riiight, that's what I meant. Great job! Do I need to point out your destructive bitterness here, or is it plain? Oh, why take a chance?
I say something I don't like about the post office, and then things I do like. You "agree" with me by ignoring and dismissing my point. You know, that thing you are adamant about me doing, which hopefully, if you stick to your word will get you to ignore me. I'm glad it's okay for you to do, you transparent hypocrite. Blech!

Come on guys, I hope we can get back to being civil soon.
I'll agree about the USPS having problems with their insurance. There was recently a news report on how it really isn't insurance at all, or something like that.
I am glad to have them around though. Definitely a better deal on the small stuff. But yeah, UPS really is great with the big stuff.
But fedex I am not so fond of. I don't understand why anybody would use it over USPS or UPS.

That private system's so efficient, that must be why it's cheaper, faster, and more reliable to send my package via UPS and FedEx.. Oh wait...no it's not. I
These anti-gub'ment freemarketeers always are a hoot.

Wow--why are you so angry? Keep the anger about the Stein thread IN the Stein thread please, if you can. Thanks.
I agree with Technocrat's point about government agencies being more reliable than their private counterparts. I've quite frankly never had a problem with the post office.
For things that are necessities (shipping, electricity, healthcare, etc.), I prefer government programs over private companies. However, also, with something like shipping, I think the fact that people have a choice between private and government is one of the things that keeps the service and price down.

Everything from the *EDIT part down was put in to make a point AFTER everything from the *EDIT up, which was my original post, that happened to contain no anger. The FIRST post that derailed the topic was indeed Technocrats falsely agreeing with my point just to be spiteful. I am sorry if you think I'm angry, because it's clear to me that I'm not, and am simply not allowing techno to do that without being called out.

He was nasty because he has a very nasty passive-aggressive streak. He likes to pretend he's civil, but then brings in things from other threads that have nothing to do with this conversation. He's paranoid or something.
Apparently, you aren't allowed to disagree with him. He then "calls you out." Disagreement is being mean to him. His point about me falsely agreeing gives me a chuckle, though.

Okay, well, anyway, let's just bring the subject back to "shipping" again, cool?

An UPS van crashed in Charleston, burned completely. It had my entire payroll of wrote checks in it, and several contracts I had signed and was sending in. They never contacted me. When I called tracking two days later, they told me of the wreck, and excused their none communicate to me by saying that they knew everyone with something on the truck would eventually miss it and call them.
No more UPS for me.

Wow, that's really lame. They HAD the contacts, they should have used them. Really lame.
